Race Report: 80s Retro Run 5K

Full disclosure: I received complimentary entry to the 80s Retro Run 5K.  All my opinions about the race and especially the post race brunch are clearly mine.

I was SO EXCITED to run another race with Katie.  It had been approximately 100 years since our last race and I was really looking forward to it.  Never MIND the fact that we would be in our best retro 80s finest for the big event!

Katie and I met up at chez Heddleston to drop the boys off and head to Frederick.  I was excited to run a race in Frederick as it’s our new adopted home with MB being stationed there.  We arrived at the Frederick County Fair Grounds, picked up our packets {which consisted of a sweet t and some rocking retro shades} and stood around to FREEZE until the race started.  We also met up with some of Katie’s friends who were running the race including super nice Jen and Holly of Mama Bear blogs.  Before too long, after chucking and jiving to some sick 80s beats, our side ponies, scruchies and leg warmers were off!

My favorite part of the race, which wound through the fair grounds, other than running on the horse track, was seeing all the super cool outfits:  Madonna, Hulk Hogan and of course some amazing Day Glo work out leotards.  We had a great time running as a group, checking out the outfits and chatting.  It only took us about a mile to really warm up and we all ran really strong races.  The only downside to the course was running on the grass fields.  Some people really like off-roading but my ankles and knees aren’t huge fans.  That was literally the only thing I didn’t love about the race.  We had a great morning running a fun, untimed, super race.  My favorite thing about races like the 80s Retro Run is that it gets people off the couch, into cute outfits and excited about running.  I love anything that bring the sport to even more people.

One of the best parts was meeting the boys {all four of them — 2 adult husbands and 2 miniature Heddlestons} for brunch at Barbara Fritchie in Frederick which was delicious and reasonably priced.

All told it was an amazing start to the weekend and I’m so happy to have the opportunity to run the race — especially with one of my great BRFs!

Did you race this weekend?  Have you ever done a retro race?

Love the outfits! I’m not a big fan of running through fields either – I’ve done a couple of mud runs that go through fields and I’m not a fan of turning ankles! I was signed up for a Totally Awesome 80s run but I was injured and had to skip. BOO! I would have totally rocked the side pony. 😉
