My broads and I registered for the 10K as a way to celebrate our fall race season. The important event was the post race brunch at Farmers Fishers Bakers. This race would also be my updated proof of time for the Princess Half Marathon in February. Win, win win!
In my head, this was also another race on the road to redemption from the Marine Corps Marathon. I know I shouldn’t really pin my hopes onto one race. I really feel I’m the sum of my training — not just the outcome of one race. But sometimes you just want the race results to show how hard you worked and how much you want it.
Needless to say I had some goals for this race. I really wanted to bust my former 10K PR of 59:17. Part of me also just wanted to finish. I picked up LV and we met Tori, Stacee and her bad ass mom (who won her age group. NBD!) and lined up.
We took off at a pretty good clip. Miles 1 and 2 9:49 and 10:11. Tori, who just ran her first full marathon in sub 5 realized, hey I don’t need a good qualifying time for Princess today (we are running together yay!), I already ran one at a freaking marathon. Kthanxbai. She volunteered at the water station like a boss. I was feeling a little shaky but we kept it moving.
LV continued to pace me through the turn around. Miles 3 and 4 8:58 and 8:54. I started to really hit my stride right at the turn around. LV, who had also just beasted her first marathon encourage me to keep it going so I felt like it was time to lay the hammer. At the water stop at mile 4, Tori and I met back up and ran together for another 1.5 miles. When we hit mile 5, I really knew I was going to PR. The sub 9 minute miles felt hard but not impossible.
Miles 5 and 6 9:30 and 8:53. I rounded the corner and saw the finish line. All I could think about was how I had this and so many finish lines ahead of me. That some days you’ve got and some days you don’t. I thought of all those girls out on the course at different places that love and support me regardless of which day I’m having. And so many other people far and wide that I’m so lucky to celebrate and comiserate with. And that’s better than a PR.
Except when you blast your old PR by two minutes and feel like you’ve won the Olympics.
My official results: 57:47 (not :17 as I excitability and accidentally posted on social!). After LV finished (COURSE PR BY LIKE 10 MINUTES WHAT?!) we met up with Tori and Stacee and her mom. We high tailed it my car and we hit brunch which was the best way to round out an awesome morning and an all around awesome finish to this cycle.
Two important notes:
- My new bolt tights are awesome — light and breathable, I just ordered the wrong size. I need to get a medium in the next pair.
- We missed Mandy so much.
How was your weekend?
